So should I just always shop at balfesbikes.co.uk?
Not on this evidence. balfesbikes.co.uk was cheapest on 29 of the 72 products we could compare it on — so on the other 43, paying its price meant paying more than you had to. Across everything we compared, the cheapest price was held by 26 different shops.
That is the thing a ranking like this cannot tell you on its own. No shop here is cheapest on everything, and which one wins changes product by product — so the shop that saved you money last time is a coin toss on your next order. The only way to know is to check the specific thing you are buying.
How this is measured
Every price here was read from the retailer’s own product page, the way a shopper sees it, and re-checked on a rolling basis. Nothing is taken from a feed or an API.
- Only products sold by 3 or more of the shops we track count. With two, “cheapest” is a coin toss. The cheapest price in a comparison is sometimes at a shop too small to be ranked here in its own right.
- Only in-stock listings count, and only prices in pounds. A sold-out price is not a price.
- Only prices we have re-read in the last 7 days count. Comparing a month-old figure against this morning’s is not a comparison, and a shop we cannot read often enough is left out rather than guessed at.
- The premium is a median, not an average. One mispriced listing cannot move a median, and we would rather understate a gap than invent one.
- A shop needs 25 or more compared products to appear here. Sample sizes are shown on every row, because 28 products and 104 products do not deserve equal weight.
- The sample is everything we track, not only what is browsable here. The public catalogue hides products under £50; those comparisons still count, because they are still real prices at real shops.
What this does not show
- Our catalogue leans towards mid and high-end kit, so this is not a verdict on everything each shop sells.
- Delivery, returns, warranty handling and workshop service are not priced in, and for plenty of riders those matter more than a few percent.
- “Cheapest most often” and “cheapest on average” are different questions. Both columns are here because neither one alone is the answer.
